Why was I charged a returned-payment fee?

What happens when your bank sends a rent payment back, and what the fee is.

Read the reason

Action: Open Rent and Finance. The rent charge shows the reason your bank gave, with its code, for example Insufficient funds (R01).

The reason comes from your bank, not from your landlord. Your bank can tell you more.

Step 1: Read the reason

Understand the fee

Action: A $50 Rentari.ai returned-payment fee is added to your balance, capped at the maximum your state allows.

It is Rentari.ai's fee for a bank return, not a charge from your landlord, and it is never charged for a card decline.

Step 2: Understand the fee

Fix the cause

Action: Add money to the account, or add a different bank account under payment methods.

A closed account or a typo in the account number will bounce again until the account is replaced.

Step 3: Fix the cause

Pay again

Action: Pay the balance from Rent and Finance. Paying promptly avoids a late fee under your lease on top.

One returned-payment fee is charged per return, and never more than one in fourteen days.

Step 4: Pay again
